Today I was running about 5 miles including around Edinburgh's Arthur Seat. Once I reached the top of Arthur's Seat I walked for a couple of minutes and another runner ran past me. I then did as I always do which was a series of sprints with walking rest periods. Eventually I caught up with the runner who had ran past me.
Now he had ran maybe 1.5 miles at a steady pace, and I had ran the distance and caught up with him but through sprint intervals. The high intensity training I did will burn more fat and increase fitness much better than the steady state running.
So if you are running, even if you're running for an endurance event such as a marathon, you should still be incorporating sprinting into the mix. Remember, it's all about quality, not quantity.
